BILL OF RIGHTS RESEARCH PROJECT What was the project all about?
The 7th grade students in Ms. Colemans Language Arts classes have published their Research papers in the form of Web pages. Students researched American controversies related to the Bill of Rights in connection with their Social Studies unit on the Constitution and their Language Arts unit on Justice. The subject of students research questions ranged from the long-debated argument on whether the death penalty should be considered a cruel and unusual punishment, to more recent controversies, such as whether school administrators should be able to issue consequences for the content of a students MySpace page.
What did the students learn from this project?
The students were able to learn and demonstrate knowledge of the steps in the research process, while at the same time learn about issues of the law and social justice that are relevant to their everyday lives. Giving the students the means to publish their findings online made the project more significant and important to them, because their research was authentic and not just for the eyes of the teacher. The use of the Web Blender software was also very motivating for them, giving them something to look forward to at the end of a lengthy and challenging process.
